Outreach

Birds of my Rio Claro

The evident distance between scientific knowledge and society and how scientists can play a role in overcoming this gap has pushed me into action. I’ve developed an outreach project to bring the local population closer to the university and the scientific knowledge. Birds of my Rio Claro (Aves da minha Rio Claro) is an outreach project that uses birdwatching activities, lectures, and interactive games about bird biology to raise communities' awareness on this matter. In this group, I incentive and empower young female scientists and students to conduct activities, which can improve their self-confidence and self-esteem. For me, this project is not a one-way teaching process but,  multiple exchanges between people, where my leadership and communication skills are improved. This previous experience makes me curious to see how outreach initiatives are developed in American universities and whether there will be an opportunity to share my experience.

Teaching

Taxidermy
I have learned taxidermy during my time at the Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo. Since then, I have been promoting curses, talks, and students supervising to teach this technic. I always bring the importance of museum collections for science and for scientific divulgation. Furthermore, I teach how to make morphological measurements of the animal body and the digestive tract and how this data can be used to answer ecological questions. I believe that this knowledge is important because it is possible to link different areas of Biology, like Zoology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Ecology by giving to students a multidisciplinary view of one technic.
